The nylon ring inside the nut creates rotational resistance when displaced by a mating male threaded fastener, thus preventing loosening. These are ok. I'm 5'6", 150lbs. I got a large. The colors are fun. The waist band is comfortable, fits well, doesn't dig in, and sits high enough to not affect a my C-section scar, but they constantly ride up.
